The winning JA Company of the Year student teams from JA’s six regions—JA Africa, JA Americas, JA Asia Pacific, JA Europe, INJAZ Al-Arab/JA MENA, and Junior Achievement USA—automatically become finalists.

The JA Company Program is the world’s oldest hands-on entrepreneurial experience, helping students develop real companies that create products or services to meet a specific need; build, market, and deliver products; and earn real profits. Student companies compete at the local level, and some move on to national and regional competitions. Until this award was established, the highest prize that a JA student company could earn was the coveted first place at one of JA’s six regional competitions.

The 2024 De La Vega Global Entrepreneurship Award competition included teams from JA Ghana (AID Electronics), JA Argentina (MANIK), Prestasi Junior Indonesia (SIEVASCO), JA Greece (Isometricks), INJAZ Oman (Warif), and JA Southeastern Pennsylvania (Youthful Thinkers).

Today, award sponsor Ralph de la Vega announced the 2024 winner: Isometricks (JA Greece), students at Experimental Senior High School of the University of Macedonia and winners of the 2023 JA Europe Gen-E Company of the Year competition. The team won US$15,000 cash prize for its product Wizzle, a 3D-printed puzzle game with medical and educational applications. The five other JA student companies also won US$5,000 each, courtesy of the de la Vega Family Foundation.

To Isometricks, playing is a serious matter. The company’s product, Wizzle—a combination of the words “wizard” and “puzzle”—is an open-ended game of thought and creativity with hidden math and educational and medical applications. This pioneering collection of colorful tiles is designed according to mathematical rules (each puzzle is designed by members of the Experimental High School Math Club) and assembled with mosaic logic, providing endless possibilities for creativity. As a non-digital, hands-on learning experience, Wizzle is a valuable educational tool for teachers and students, enabling inclusive learning experiences for those with dyslexia and for refugee students who struggle with language. Additionally, Wizzle is a promising non-pharmaceutical intervention suitable for people of all ages with mild cognitive disabilities.

Mr. De La Vega commented on the contributions all six finalists are making to the world: “The power of entrepreneurship is that it enables you to achieve anything you want to achieve. There is strife in the world. There’s hunger in the world. There’s war in the world. But you bring messages of hope, of inspiration, of overcoming adversities, of partnering, of working with each other.”

Salvatore Nigro has added: When Isometricks won Gen-E last year, all of Europe saw their potential. The ‘De la Vega’ global recognition is a testimony of the great work of JA Greece, the engaging community of businesses, educators, boards and staff of JA across our continent, and the innovation of the youth who are shaping Europe and the world with their entrepreneurial journey.”

JA Worldwide CEO Asheesh Advani agreed. “Being an entrepreneur in your teenage years is transformational, teaching essential skills early in life. And, as Team Isometricks and all the student finalists demonstrated, JA entrepreneurs can create value for society as well as turning a profit.”

Empowering the Next Generation for a Sustainable Future https://sites.jaeurope.org/website/2024/04/11/empowering-the-next-generation-for-a-sustainable-future/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 22:00:00 +0000 https://sites.jaeurope.org/website/2024/04/11/empowering-the-next-generation-for-a-sustainable-future/ The Intergenerational Dialogue on “Sustainability Education,” hosted by JA Europe and EY, brought together key voices, including European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius and Julie Linn Teigland, EY EMEIA Area Managing Partner and Global Leader – Women and Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe.

This engaging roundtable, moderated by Diana Filip, Deputy CEO of JA Europe, delved into crucial topics such as the pivotal role of education, the impact of technology on skills, and the need for further public-private collaboration.

Commissioner Sinkevičius emphasized the unpredictability of challenges faced by the EU in recent years, highlighting the importance of the Green Deal, empowering consumers, and addressing pollution. In parallel, Julie Linn Teigland stressed the need to invest in the future of the young generation, focusing on resilience, innovation, and responsibility as essential skills: “One-third of the European population is below 30 years old. This is a powerful indicator that we need to invest in their future by fostering skills about resilience, innovation but also, most importantly, responsibility for a better and more even place to live in.”

The event also unveiled the Generational Sustainability Survey 2023, revealing that young people are dissatisfied with the current state of sustainability education, often turning to social media as their primary source. Encouragingly, both Gen Alphas and Z expressed a strong desire for change, with 82% and 76% respectively believing that education is fundamental for leading a sustainable life.

“The educational system plays a crucial role in facilitating behavioural change. Its responsibility lies in instilling skills through the curriculum,” summarised Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe.

To provide real-world context, two JA alumni, Victoria Angelova, and Charlotte Piessevaux shared their journeys in building essential skills for today’s workplace and creating sustainable start-ups. Their experiences underscored the importance of customer demand for sustainable choices and the effectiveness of various strategies within their industries.

The dialogue concluded with a unanimous agreement on the importance of collaboration among different stakeholders, with Commissioner Sinkevičius emphasizing the need for dialogues to ignite action. “We should be aware that dialogues should always lead to action even if there are opposing opinions or contrasting ones. What has been agreed on, should be implemented by all,” concluded Virginijus Sinkevičius.

This event and the subsequent dialogue underscored the critical role of education in shaping sustainable mindsets and the necessity for collaborative efforts to drive meaningful change. As we move forward, it is imperative to heed the insights shared in this dialogue and work collectively to foster a more sustainable future for all.

Developed by a consortium of 11 partners across 6 EU countries, led by JA Europe as project coordinator, Cultural BEES project’s core objective is to equip young people aged 15-30 years with the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools to excel in their careers within the Cultural and Creative Industries. Drawing inspiration from the proven “Inspire-Prepare-Succeed” model by Junior Achievement, Cultural BEES will offer a comprehensive training programme and digital toolkit designed to support the development of ideas, projects, and businesses within the CCI sector. UNESCO Cyprus is associated partner of the project.

Through a blend of face-to-face training sessions, self-paced online learning, and virtual communities, Cultural BEES will empower participants to create sustainable, inclusive, and innovative projects. The project will also conduct large-scale piloting of its methodology, with 1000 students across secondary and tertiary education levels in Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Italy benefiting from the programme.

Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe commented on the project’s potential impact: “Cultural BEES represents a unique opportunity to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit among young people and unleash their creativity in the Cultural and Creative Industries. By providing access to tailored training and resources, we aim to cultivate a new generation of innovators and changemakers who will shape the future of Europe.”

Speaking at the kick-off meeting, Diana Filip, Deputy CEO and Chief Development Officer of JA Europe said: “JA Europe is thrilled to embark on this new project which is connecting the next generation of Europeans to our Cultural and Creative Industries. The Cultural BEES consortium comprises talent and expertise from universities, social enterprises, strategic design hubs, associations of municipalities, and SMEs, each bringing complementary skills and knowledge to the project. At its core, the “Cultural BEES” project represents a remarkable partnership between UNESCO Cyprus and JA Cyprus, united by a shared commitment to fostering entrepreneurship skills within the Cultural and Creative Industries sector.”

To ensure sustainable growth within this sector, it is important to promote education and skills development with a strong emphasis on ethical values, thus investing in a cultural industry that not only thrives economically but also enriches the fabric of society.

The panel discussion seeks to address the critical role of education in CCI, in empowering the next generation of creative minds to contribute positively to the cultural sector, fostering an environment of innovation, inclusivity, and integrity. New micro-credential on Employment Skills https://sites.jaeurope.org/website/2024/02/06/new-micro-credential-on-employment-skills/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://sites.jaeurope.org/website/2024/02/06/new-micro-credential-on-employment-skills/ JA Europe, the largest provider of education programmes for entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial health in Europe, is thrilled to announce the launch a new project funded by the European Union (EU) under Erasmus+ Forward Looking Programme, EMPASS: The Employment Skills Pass, a Quality Standard for Faster Transition from Education to Employment.

This innovative initiative aims to equip young people with the tools and qualifications necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic job market. JA Europe is leading a consortium of 14 partners in charge of developing the new micro-credential empowering young Europeans to develop and validate essential employability skills, and at the same time addressing the evolving demands of employers across Europe.

The new micro-credential will be developed in collaboration with leading experts in education and industry, through a partnership ranging from different national JA organisations, representatives of the business sector as well as technical and vocational education (TVET) providers. Building on the existing training experience of the project consortium partners, the new micro-credential will have a focus on soft skills and TVET, and will be delivered through a combination of online assessments and practical challenges. The micro-credential obtained upon successful completion of the programme will demonstrate the candidate’s work readiness along specific skills and competences to potential employers.

At the occasion of the EMPASS project kick-off, Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe, said: “JA Europe is excited to develop a new micro-credential for employability, building on the success of the Entrepreneurial Skills Pass (ESP). He added: “Thanks to the generous support of the European Union, we can now offer young people especially in TVET a flexible and practical way to enhance their soft skills and demonstrate their work readiness effectively.”

Diana Filip, Deputy CEO of JA Europe, welcomed consortium members at the kick-off event in Madrid, saying: “The EMPASS project will be a game changer in that it empowers Europe’s youth to take charge of their future and contribute positively to the European economy. Together with our consortium partners, we will build a new assessment and certification tool that will build bridges between education and employment and facilitate the youth’s transition from education to employment.”

The EU’s support for developing a new micro-credential underscores its commitment to fostering a highly skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth in Europe. The EMPASS project objectives align closely with the New Skills Agenda for Europe and the Digital Education Action Plan, which recognise the need for innovative, learner-centered approaches to education and skills development.

As part of the initiative, JA Europe will leverage its extensive network of 42 member organisations across 40 European countries, to pilot and implement the new micro-credential on a large scale, reaching thousands of young Europeans each year.

JA Worldwide Nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize https://sites.jaeurope.org/website/2024/02/01/ja-worldwide-nominated-for-the-2024-nobel-peace-prize/ Thu, 01 Feb 2024 08:00:57 +0000 https://sites.jaeurope.org/website/?p=8548

We are proud to announce that JA Worldwide has been nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, our third nomination in three years. JA Europe is a member of JA Worldwide.

Nobel Peace Prize nominations may be received from heads of state, certain elected officials and cabinet members, university professors in selected fields, past Nobel laureates, and other notable individuals, as laid out by the Nobel Nominating Committee. A number of eligible nominators approached us about nominating JA Worldwide and, although the identity of each nominee officially remains anonymous for 50 years, we were thrilled to have been given evidence that we were nominated this year.

Founded 105 years ago, JA is one of the largest youth-serving NGOs in the world, delivering over 17 million student learning experiences for employment and entrepreneurship last year. Operating in over 100 countries, JA teaches youth to develop the skillset and mindset to create businesses, find meaningful employment, and build healthy cities and towns. As a result of what they learn through JA, students develop ambitions beyond their own economic reward, understanding that entrepreneurship is not only a means to financial wellbeing for themselves and their families but also a vehicle to foster social stability and inclusive societies. JA students and alumni create and lead companies that offer products and services that fill a consumer need; enable an ecosystem of employees, partners, and suppliers to thrive; and also fundamentally transform the world, or at least their small corner of it.

Starting with our second nomination in 2023 and continuing through today, JA staff members throughout the world have begun working toward a collective goal: living up to the promise of Alfred Nobel’s vision. These nominations are changing us, forcing us to ask, “What is JA doing globally to empower young people to build a more peaceful society?” For over a century, JA has operated in areas of political instability, violence, and war, helping youth build entrepreneurship skills and economic resilience. By creating opportunity, prosperity, and self-belief, our work helps youth develop the skillset and mindset to build thriving communities. And we are ready to move even further into our peace directive, empowering young people to become global citizens, develop civic-engagement skills, and nurture cross-border friendships from a young age.

Asheesh Advani, CEO of JA Worldwide, was thrilled to hear that JA has been nominated again this year for our work with young people. “A lack of economic agency and a lack of hope lead to instability. Education and economic empowerment lead to prosperity and peace. JA prepares young people to see themselves as future job creators, leaders, and innovators who can actively contribute to the economic prosperity of their communities. This is the path to peace.”

Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe said: “This new nomination is a reminder of the relevance of JA’s mission. For JA in Europe, it encourages us to keep providing opportunities to the 6 million young people we serve every year. They are the agents of change for a brighter peaceful future and we are proud to support their ambition and dreams.”

Laurence Morvan, Chair of JA Europe added: “JA brings together many stakeholders – teachers, private and public sector, to enable youth with the mindset and skills of the future. Thus contributing to thriving communities, and a better world everywhere.”

Between 1901 and 2023, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to 141 laureates, including 111 individuals and 30 organizations. Among those 30 organizations is another nonprofit from the annual list of the top ten social-good organizations, Médecins sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. UNICEF, another youth-serving NGO, was awarded the prize in 1965, after being nominated for several years.

Brussels and Milan, 13 December 2023

Junior Achievement (JA) Europe today announced a new collaborative initiative with the Micron Foundation that blends entrepreneurship with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) content with an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI).

The initiative focuses on youth from underserved communities and will benefit approximately 650 students from Italy and Germany.

JA Europe and the Micron Foundation will develop programming that integrates the principles of entrepreneurship with STEM disciplines, including AI. The goal is to help students gain technical expertise and an understanding of the AI field while inspiring them to pursue roles in the technology industry.

In Germany, JA students will participate in a three-day innovation lab and experience hands-on STEM activities, learn methods for generating ideas and developing products, work on business plans and create prototypes for their concepts.

In Italy, students will engage in projects and experiments to establish “small enterprises” to cultivate entrepreneurial skills. Micron volunteers will mentor students as they design products or services and craft business, marketing and sales plans throughout their projects.

Salvatore NigroCEO of JA Europe, said, “STEM education is critical for preparing the next generation of Europeans to excel in the digital economy. By blending technical knowledge and entrepreneurial education, we provide youth with a comprehensive skill- and mindset to transform global challenges into opportunities.” He added, “We are excited to embark on this new partnership with the Micron Foundation especially because of its focus on empowering the underserved. This collaboration aims to narrow the digital skills gap, creating more opportunities for youth from diverse backgrounds.”

“The Micron Foundation is steadfast in our commitment to providing access to STEM education through meaningful engagements and partnerships that support underrepresented youth,” said April ArnzenPresident of the Micron Foundation and Executive Vice President at Micron Technology. “Through our work with JA Europe, we hope to ignite and nurture a passion for STEM in students from Italy and Germany, setting the stage for them to become the future innovators, problem-solvers and leaders of the future.”
