The JA Company Program is the world’s oldest hands-on entrepreneurial experience, helping students develop real companies that create products or services to meet a specific need; build, market, and deliver products; and earn real profits. Student companies compete at the local level, and some move on to national and regional competitions. Until this award was established, the highest prize that a JA student company could earn was the coveted first place at one of JA’s six regional competitions.
The 2024 De La Vega Global Entrepreneurship Award competition included teams from JA Ghana (AID Electronics), JA Argentina (MANIK), Prestasi Junior Indonesia (SIEVASCO), JA Greece (Isometricks), INJAZ Oman (Warif), and JA Southeastern Pennsylvania (Youthful Thinkers).
Today, award sponsor Ralph de la Vega announced the 2024 winner: Isometricks (JA Greece), students at Experimental Senior High School of the University of Macedonia and winners of the 2023 JA Europe Gen-E Company of the Year competition. The team won US$15,000 cash prize for its product Wizzle, a 3D-printed puzzle game with medical and educational applications. The five other JA student companies also won US$5,000 each, courtesy of the de la Vega Family Foundation.
To Isometricks, playing is a serious matter. The company’s product, Wizzle—a combination of the words “wizard” and “puzzle”—is an open-ended game of thought and creativity with hidden math and educational and medical applications. This pioneering collection of colorful tiles is designed according to mathematical rules (each puzzle is designed by members of the Experimental High School Math Club) and assembled with mosaic logic, providing endless possibilities for creativity. As a non-digital, hands-on learning experience, Wizzle is a valuable educational tool for teachers and students, enabling inclusive learning experiences for those with dyslexia and for refugee students who struggle with language. Additionally, Wizzle is a promising non-pharmaceutical intervention suitable for people of all ages with mild cognitive disabilities.
Mr. De La Vega commented on the contributions all six finalists are making to the world: “The power of entrepreneurship is that it enables you to achieve anything you want to achieve. There is strife in the world. There’s hunger in the world. There’s war in the world. But you bring messages of hope, of inspiration, of overcoming adversities, of partnering, of working with each other.”
Salvatore Nigro has added: “When Isometricks won Gen-E last year, all of Europe saw their potential. The ‘De la Vega’ global recognition is a testimony of the great work of JA Greece, the engaging community of businesses, educators, boards and staff of JA across our continent, and the innovation of the youth who are shaping Europe and the world with their entrepreneurial journey.”
JA Worldwide CEO Asheesh Advani agreed. “Being an entrepreneur in your teenage years is transformational, teaching essential skills early in life. And, as Team Isometricks and all the student finalists demonstrated, JA entrepreneurs can create value for society as well as turning a profit.”

]]>This engaging roundtable, moderated by Diana Filip, Deputy CEO of JA Europe, delved into crucial topics such as the pivotal role of education, the impact of technology on skills, and the need for further public-private collaboration.
Commissioner Sinkevičius emphasized the unpredictability of challenges faced by the EU in recent years, highlighting the importance of the Green Deal, empowering consumers, and addressing pollution. In parallel, Julie Linn Teigland stressed the need to invest in the future of the young generation, focusing on resilience, innovation, and responsibility as essential skills: “One-third of the European population is below 30 years old. This is a powerful indicator that we need to invest in their future by fostering skills about resilience, innovation but also, most importantly, responsibility for a better and more even place to live in.”
The event also unveiled the Generational Sustainability Survey 2023, revealing that young people are dissatisfied with the current state of sustainability education, often turning to social media as their primary source. Encouragingly, both Gen Alphas and Z expressed a strong desire for change, with 82% and 76% respectively believing that education is fundamental for leading a sustainable life.
“The educational system plays a crucial role in facilitating behavioural change. Its responsibility lies in instilling skills through the curriculum,” summarised Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe.
To provide real-world context, two JA alumni, Victoria Angelova, and Charlotte Piessevaux shared their journeys in building essential skills for today’s workplace and creating sustainable start-ups. Their experiences underscored the importance of customer demand for sustainable choices and the effectiveness of various strategies within their industries.
The dialogue concluded with a unanimous agreement on the importance of collaboration among different stakeholders, with Commissioner Sinkevičius emphasizing the need for dialogues to ignite action. “We should be aware that dialogues should always lead to action even if there are opposing opinions or contrasting ones. What has been agreed on, should be implemented by all,” concluded Virginijus Sinkevičius.
This event and the subsequent dialogue underscored the critical role of education in shaping sustainable mindsets and the necessity for collaborative efforts to drive meaningful change. As we move forward, it is imperative to heed the insights shared in this dialogue and work collectively to foster a more sustainable future for all.

]]>The event, consisting of a panel discussion and a photographic exhibition, will take place on 14 February 2024, 13.30-14.30, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (Conference Room B1, ground floor).
The Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) play a pivotal role in fostering innovation, economic growth, and societal well-being. To ensure sustainable growth within this sector, it is important to promote education and skills development with a strong emphasis on ethical values, thus investing in a cultural industry that not only thrives economically but also enriches the fabric of society.
The panel discussion seeks to address the critical role of education in CCI, in empowering the next generation of creative minds to contribute positively to the cultural sector, fostering an environment of innovation, inclusivity, and integrity. The discussion will consider interdisciplinary skills development and entrepreneurship in CCI; ethical implications related to access, innovation, community engagement and well-being; multi-stakeholder collaboration connecting youth with cultural professionals and experienced actors in the cultural industries, to bridge gaps and offer holistic learning experiences.
Alongside the discussion, a photographic exhibition will be presented, showcasing the best practices of the programme, Transcultura: Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity, implemented by the UNESCO Regional Office in Havana, with generous funding of the European Union. The programme aims to leverage the rich cultural diversity of the Caribbean to turn it into a driver of sustainable development, through cooperation and exchange within the region and with Europe. It also seeks to professionalize the cultural and creative sector in the Caribbean and to create opportunities for entrepreneurship, socio-economic projects and collaboration in cultural and creative sectors, heritage and tourism. The exhibition will feature the main activities and results of the Transcultura programme since its launch, with a focus on highlighting its impact on young beneficiaries.
The overall objective of both the discussion and the exhibition is to inspire educators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to collectively invest in promoting education in the Cultural and Creative Industries to unlock the full potential of young minds, fostering a new generation of artists and innovators who not only create captivating content but also thrive as entrepreneurs with ethical values in the dynamic world of creativity.

]]>This innovative initiative aims to equip young people with the tools and qualifications necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic job market. JA Europe is leading a consortium of 14 partners in charge of developing the new micro-credential empowering young Europeans to develop and validate essential employability skills, and at the same time addressing the evolving demands of employers across Europe.
The new micro-credential will be developed in collaboration with leading experts in education and industry, through a partnership ranging from different national JA organisations, representatives of the business sector as well as technical and vocational education (TVET) providers. Building on the existing training experience of the project consortium partners, the new micro-credential will have a focus on soft skills and TVET, and will be delivered through a combination of online assessments and practical challenges. The micro-credential obtained upon successful completion of the programme will demonstrate the candidate’s work readiness along specific skills and competences to potential employers.
At the occasion of the EMPASS project kick-off, Salvatore Nigro, CEO of JA Europe, said: “JA Europe is excited to develop a new micro-credential for employability, building on the success of the Entrepreneurial Skills Pass (ESP)“. He added: “Thanks to the generous support of the European Union, we can now offer young people especially in TVET a flexible and practical way to enhance their soft skills and demonstrate their work readiness effectively.”
Diana Filip, Deputy CEO of JA Europe, welcomed consortium members at the kick-off event in Madrid, saying: “The EMPASS project will be a game changer in that it empowers Europe’s youth to take charge of their future and contribute positively to the European economy. Together with our consortium partners, we will build a new assessment and certification tool that will build bridges between education and employment and facilitate the youth’s transition from education to employment.”
The EU’s support for developing a new micro-credential underscores its commitment to fostering a highly skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth in Europe. The EMPASS project objectives align closely with the New Skills Agenda for Europe and the Digital Education Action Plan, which recognise the need for innovative, learner-centered approaches to education and skills development.
As part of the initiative, JA Europe will leverage its extensive network of 42 member organisations across 40 European countries, to pilot and implement the new micro-credential on a large scale, reaching thousands of young Europeans each year.
